What's Your Gam3? 24th Sept

New games straight to your inbox

Welcome

Welcome to What’s Your Gam3? My aim with everything I do is to introduce you to new games! As I continue to improve the newsletter, all feedback is gratefully received. Now, let’s see what has happened this week.

Thoughts on the week

The ownership myth

This week I ended up in another debate about web3 ownership.

I used to get into a lot of these, but my energy for it hasn’t been there, until now.

As a space that is tarred with the external branding of “all NFTs are a scam”, it is important for us to be very clear with our communication. This is something that a lot of people are failing at around what web3 can offer for “truly owning your assets”. Whilst it does offer more than traditional gaming, overselling the point will lead to disappointment from traditional gamers who enter the space with higher expectations.

You’ll often see “If a traditional studio shuts down you’ll lose your assets, web3 fixes this"!”. It doesn’t. The studio still has control over your NFT and the game assets it points to. It’s not as if people don’t understand this difference. In a poll, the vast majority know that this can happen. So why push a false narrative? The level of ownership web3 offers is more than impressive enough. Let us not get carried away with our excitement….

What's Your Gam3? Ep. 58

This week on What’s Your Gam3? I spoke to Titan Born. You can hear the full episode on YouTube!

Titanborn

This week I spoke with JB from Revenant Studio who is building Titanborn.

Revenant Studio

Revenant Studio is a self-funded game development company. They focus on creating web2 friendly blockchain games with a principle of ‘fun first and rewards second’, aiming to make access to Web3 seamless for Web2 users.

The game

Titanfall is Revenant’s response to a perceived gap in Web3 fighting games. It is reminiscent of classic fighting games like Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter. Currently playable on browser, offering AI and PvP modes, with more to be added, like the towers mode. The towers mode offers progressive gameplay with escalating rewards. The game features diverse attack options and weaponry, with controls currently mapped to keyboard inputs. While players can customize their characters and weaponry, the current versions are primarily cosmetic.

Web3

The team is focused on improving existing content before integrating new features like wallet integration. The developers are exploring user-friendly wallet integration options and planning to implement NFT functionality. Their upcoming mint is 300 special game passes, which are tradable and stackable, will be released. These special passes will provide early benefits and exclusive access to features in the game. The team is focusing on creating a sustainable in-game economy to avoid the pitfalls usually associated with blockchain games.

Community engagement and outreach

Revenant is conducting monthly competitions, with prizes distributed based on the leaderboard rankings. The team values feedback and has addressed exploits found by highly engaged community members. They’ve fixed issues including an in-game exploit allowing unintended damage and multi-device login that could rack up points.

Collaborations with other projects and content creators in the Web3 space are underway to distribute special passes and increase engagement. They are utilizing platforms like TikTok for promotions and have a dedicated team member for short-form content creation.

They are active on Twitter and have warned users about impersonators. The community can engage through Discord and Twitter and can earn rewards through various competitions.

Looking to the future

Revenant aims to create a long-lasting, satisfying user experience with stable revenue generation, closely resembling Web2 gaming models. They are looking for funding and using game metrics to appeal to potential investors. With their season 1 having 250 players and 60,000 matches played in the game. They aim to prove the game’s potential for success through demonstrated growth and engagement. They are planning a token raise in Q1 of the next year and subsequently releasing a Titans token.
